Outsell Women’s Conference — The Importance of Mentoring and Sponsoring

With women holding only 6% of the CEO positions in our industry’s top 350 companies and only 22% of the C-suite in those firms, we have work to do to advance the stats. Men are part of the equation: Mentoring and sponsoring women into leadership positions by both men and women is essential. Without it, our chances of improving the stats will be a challenge at best.

One woman I know, Debra Walton, is passionate about gender equality and a tireless advocate who speaks globally on diversity and leadership as well as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) more broadly. Debra is full of stories about the importance of mentors and sponsors in her life and the role they play in those of others. She not only fulfills the role herself, she’s been the recipient of this type of support and knows first-hand the importance it makes. We’ve asked her to address this topic at the Outsell Women’s Conference, June 6 in New York, and you’ll be blown away by the power and passion Debra holds in her convictions.

Debra is Refinitiv’s Executive Vice President & Chief Revenue Officer, leading all sales, client, and partner relationship management and market development activities. Her global team, operating in 65 countries, brings the entire range of Refinitiv solutions to meet the data analytics and workflow needs of their customers. Debra is all about relationships and the importance of building them for customers and colleagues alike.

Since she joined the firm in 2003, Debra has lived and worked on three continents and has held senior executive positions across product, content, sales, and marketing at Refinitiv and the Financial & Risk business division of Thomson Reuters. She is also a board member of the Tradeweb Board of Managers.

To improve the stats, it’s important for senior leaders to actively mentor and sponsor. And it’s important for mentees to have support as well and to know the difference between a mentor and a sponsor. The lessons learned by someone who gets it can make a real difference every day.
